Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder – Or is it not?

PORN FILM FESTIVAL VIENNA
A Discussion about Lookism, Body Positivity and the Fight for Body Freedom

Fat, hairy, queer, aging bodies, people of color, people with disabilities: anyone in our society who doesn’t conform to the norm, who doesn’t submit to the commercialized compulsion to self-optimization, is marginalized, bullied an excluded. But who defines beauty and who benefits from it? In any case, one thing is clear: beauty is not only a business, it is above all one thing: political.

When a woman gets death threats because of unshaven legs, when job applications are judged by body weight, when a darker complexion is “in” but black people continue to be structurally discriminated against – then a rethinking of the majority and an uprising is necessary especially for those people who suffer particularly from the beauty pressure in the media and in our dealings with each other.

ELISABETH LECHNER (researcher and author of “Riot Don’t Diet”, published 2020) and ANNA STOMOSIS (genderqueer fat liberation activist) will discuss lookism, body positivity and the fight for body and sexual freedom. The panel is hosted by the head of publishing house Kremayr & Scheriau, STEFANIE JAKSCH.
